Wondrous Item Histories and Variants: Efficient Quiver

Background

The first efficient quivers were a gift of a nature god to her followers and the magical quivers once bore her name. However, the name of the god may no longer be spoken and now these quivers are known only as “efficient quivers.”

As other archers saw the original efficient quivers and wanted similar items, wizards were commissioned to create similar quivers by those archers.  These second generation quivers are identical to the originals except they bear no mark or symbol of the nature god.

Variants

Over time, some archers commissioning new efficient quivers asked for other enhancements.  A few of these ideas became relatively popular although the basic efficient quiver is still the most common variety.

Efficient Quiver of Mending

A few of the wizards who made later efficient quivers were able to incorporate a spell of mending.  This allows any non-magical broken arrows, bolts, shurikens and sling bullets placed in the quiver to be repaired instantly.  Magical ammunition may also be repaired, but the ammunition will lose its magical properties.

Other weapons placed in the efficient quiver of mending may also be repaired, but this ability will only work once per day on non-ammunition weapons.

Aside from the mending enhancement, an efficient quiver of mending’s properties are identical to an efficient quiver.

Efficient Quiver of Sturdy Missiles

Another enterprising wizard invented an improvement to the efficient quiver by adding the spell resistance to the arcane recipe. Due to this resistance, any ammunition drawn from the efficient quiver of sturdy missiles may break only if the attack roll is a natural 1. In that circumstance the chance a missile will break remains 50%. The ammunition must be fired within one minute from when it was drawn from the quiver to gain this benefit. The benefit does not apply to non-missile weapons placed in the quiver.

Aside from the resistance enhancement, an efficient quiver of sturdy missiles’ properties are identical to an efficient quiver.

Efficient Quiver of Seeking Missiles

This version of the efficient quiver causes the missiles placed inside to have an affinity for each other. Through the use of the spell guidance each time a missile from the quiver hits a target, future attacks with missiles drawn from the same quiver gain a +1 for each missile that hit that target.  The missile that hits a target serves to draw the next missile to that target.  As more missiles hit, the attraction becomes stronger.  Therefore the first attack with a missile from the quiver on a particular target will have no bonus due to the quiver, but if that missile hits the next missile gains a +1 bonus to hit against the same target.  Once a second missile from the quiver hits, the next missile gains a +2 bonus and so on.

This bonus does stack with any magical bonus a missile may already have, but it does not stack with a weapon’s bonus.  For example, if a bow is +2 and the quiver would give a +1 attack bonus to a non-magical arrow the attack bonus is +2.  If a bow is +1 and the quiver would give a +2 bonus to a +2 arrow the attack bonus is +4.

Aside from the attack bonus for missiles, an efficient quiver of seeking missiles’ properties are identical to an efficient quiver.

Original Version

This appears to be a typical arrow container capable of holding about twenty arrows. It has three distinct portions, each with a nondimensional space allowing it to store far more than would normally be possible. The first and smallest one can contain up to sixty objects of the same general size and shape as an arrow. The second slightly longer compartment holds up to eighteen objects of the same general size and shape as a javelin. The third and longest portion of the case contains as many as six objects of the same general size and shape as a bow (spears, staffs, or the like). Once the owner has filled it, the quiver can produce any item she wishes, as if from a regular quiver or scabbard. The efficient quiver weighs the same no matter what’s placed inside it.

Moderate conjuration; CL 9th; Craft Wondrous Item, secret chest; Price 1,800 gp; Weight 2 lb.
