New Set of Wilderness Map Icons

Kevin Chenevert at www.RedKobold.com has put together a number of new wilderness map icons for Hexographer.  Importing icons is a “Pro” feature in Hexographer.  But because like all Hexographer icons they are simply transparent PNG images, you can use them with other tools or with general image editors as well.

Kevin writes, “The intent was to make them look like they were inked or drawn with a calligraphy brush or pen and had a watercolor wash.” They look marvelous! The working name for this set is “calligraphy” due to the style.  He’s also agreed to make these publishable with the only caveat that you must credit him as “Kevin Chenevert of RedKobold.com.”

Here is a portion of a map using many of the icons:

Sample of Calligraphy Icons
Sample of calligraphy icons including badlands, forests, forested hills, a cairn, volcanos, etc.

As you can see, if you’re using Hexographer you may want to use larger hexes than the default settings to bring out the detail in these icons.  Kevin also suggests you set the size of the icons to be 100% (or maybe even a bit more) of a hex’s size.

Here’s a link to a forum post which includes the zip file with the icons.

Instructions

In Hexographer, you can import any PNG image individually by going to “Options” then “Customize hexes” to replace existing icons or you can go to “Options” then “Add/Edit/Remove Custom Terrain & Features” to add the icons as entirely new terrain or features.  To quickly have a set of icons add/replace as many of your existing/default icons as go to “Options” then choose “Load Hex Settings” and finally select the “calligraphy.properties” file in the zipped file–unzip it first!
