Inkwell Ideas/Hexographer Hex-Crawl Contest
We’re planning to make Hexographer even better, but we want your help!
Get a free copy of Hexographer for writing up 8 “hex crawl” locations! (If you’ve already got a copy of Hexographer, feel free to request a copy of Dungeonographer or the Coat of Arms Design Studio or a set of the DungeonMorph Cards or Dice instead.) This give-away ends after the first 12 submissions are received or by March 31, 2012.
What is a Hex Crawl Location?
A hex crawl location is simply a short description of an interesting feature of a hex on a hex map. The “hex” isn’t the important part of the term because an interesting location can be placed anywhere on any map. However, historically they were used on a hex map and there was one interesting feature of a given hex, although not all hexes had special features.
Here’s a short example:
An abandoned cabin sits at the edge of a small glade. A magical fire provides warmth to the entire house and it does not need to be replenished with wood. No other fires can be lit in the cabin. Once per day, those with an evil alignment may receive minor healing (1d4+1) by placing their hands briefly in the flames. Anyone with a different alignment or an evil creature who does it again the same day receive damage equal to the healing.
Note: Your locations may make reference to hamlets, caverns, ruins, etc. However, larger features (such as cities and castles) probably would be more fully developed than is intended for these locations.
How will these Hex Crawl Locations be used?
The primary intent is to include them in Hexographer. The pro version allows you to add notes to any hex. (Click the “Add/Edit Note” button on the left side, then click a hex. A dialog appears where you may enter a title and description. Any hex on the map with a note will have a tiny yellow rectangle. While the “Add/Edit Note” button is still selected, click any hex with a yellow rectangle to edit/view the note. The yellow rectangles can be turned off by un-checking the “Notes on Map” checkbox in the Show/Hide section to the left of the map.)
Additionally, we’ll probably post some of the entries at www.inkwellideas.com for promotional purposes.
Beyond that, who knows? But we do want to keep our options open.
The Fine Print
- Email support at inkwellideas dot com to enter.
- To qualify, send eight “hex crawl” locations. The eight entries must use four different terrain types. Terrain types are: Badlands, Desert, Grassland, Farmland, Forest, Hills, Jungle, Marsh/Swamp, Mountains, Ocean, Sea, Tundra, Underdark. You may note if a location may apply to any terrain or multiple terrain. Example: two entries may be hills, two forest, two sea, one hills and forest and one is for any terrain.
- Each location must note the terrain type, have a short (3-10 words) title and the location’s description must be 80-250 words.
- Note how you would like to be credited. You authorize the use of your name without additional compensation for promotion and advertising purposes in all media.
- Place your text in the email itself or as a plain text document. (No proprietary formats! This means no .doc, .docx, .pdf, etc.)
- One entry per person. If you would like to do more after the first eight locations, note that with your submission and if we’re interested, we’ll contact you.
- The entry must be your own work, is original and does not infringe upon any copyrighted material. You must still have the rights to resell it. (So if you’ve posted it on a blog or message board, you may submit it, but if another publisher has published or is considering it you likely may not submit it.)
- You are granting Inkwell Ideas the non-exclusive right to publish the works. Inkwell Ideas may use the works in multiple products. You may also re-sell or re-publish the works so long as further publication is non-exclusive.
- Inkwell Ideas may modify the work. This includes randomizing some elements of the description as well as cutting or adding to the description.
- This contest is subject to federal, state, and local laws where applicable.
- Inkwell Ideas reserves the right to withdraw or terminate this contest at any time without prior notice.

This is very awesome. I’ll try to send at least the 8 over!
Great idea! But is the mail address correct? Is it “inkwellideasl” or probably “inkwellideas”?
P.S.: Sorry, but your captcha really annoys me.
Thanks! I’ve fixed the typo. Yes, this captcha is different, but the 3 others I tried were still letting registrations through.
Awesome idea for a bit of community interaction. Just submitted mine.
This is great fun. I hope my entry (just submitted) is in time!
