First Lava Entries for the #GeomorphMapContest
There is a little less than a week left in our bi-weekly contest. See the full rules here. As we did last time, we’ll have a couple of posts with the designs submitted so far. Here are the submissions so far:
Our first entry was from Dyson Logos of Dyson’s Dodecahedron:
Dyson describes creating this map while having a migraine!
Next, we have two designs from Gregory MacKenzie of Busy Game Master:
Gregory also includes these details (we’re not evaluating this for the contest, but it is cool to have an adventure practically ready to go!):
The walls here are red hot and drip with beads of hot water, it is very humid. If one were to touch the walls they would cause burns.
Key:
a. Lava seeps from a hole in the wall at waist height and runs across the floor into the pit. A ladder here is red hot. Steam wells up from below.
b. A red hot lava statue, it writhes and moans in torment, placed here no doubt to punish the wicked soul which is confined within it. It begs to be set free, and there is a quest involved. It promises to reward the one(s) who free it with riches, but it lies. It would not be a good thing to free this wicked soul.
c. A red hot lava statue, it throws lava balls at anyone who attempts to pass by.
d. The mouth of this red hot lava statue emits a noxious sulphurous gas which will overcome any who remain here long. It is an oracle, which must necessarily speak. It reveals the location of an object of value some distance hence if anyone is brave enough to endure the gaseous breath.
e. Deadly gas has accumulated here in a sulphurous waist high fog, it is a danger to halflings and dwarfs.
f. This lava statue has cooled, or so it appears, it has diamond eyes, if an eye is removed it cracks open revealing it’s true nature and may leave its place to assault any foolish enough to have touched it in an attempt to recover it’s eye.
Gregory’s second design:
And the details/key for this map:
The walls here are red hot. If one were to touch the walls they would cause burns.
Key:
a. Lava Worm Dung lays steaming here, it stinks, it contains valuable gems if searched. Unfortunately touching the dung will also contaminate the unfortunate with a stink which is surely going to last about a year, is unremovable, and make them unpleasant to be around.
b. A red hot lava parasite, it can be attacked and if defeated shatters into diamonds. Striking it though may cause a weapon to be damaged or break.
c. The skin of the Lava Worm has been shed here, it is basically a pile of molten burning lava. This pile has gold within it.
d. A red hot lava parasite, it can be attacked and if defeated shatters into diamonds. Striking it though may cause a weapon to be damaged or break.
e. The skin of the Lava Worm has been shed here, it is basically a pile of molten burning lava. This pile has gems within it.
f. A Giant Lava Worm lays here cooling but it is still red hot to the touch. Attacking it with weapons would merely cause them to melt. When it cools it will shed its skin and the parasites at keys, b, d, i, and j. Of course it would happily allow adventurer’s to remove them which they can do by attacking the lumps.
g. The skin of the Lava Worm has been shed here, it is basically a pile of molten burning lava.
h. The skin of the Lava Worm has been shed here, it is basically a pile of molten burning lava.
i. A red hot lava parasite, it can be attacked and if defeated shatters into diamonds or other gemstones. Striking it though may cause a weapon to be damaged or break.
j. A red hot lava parasite, it can be attacked and if defeated shatters into diamonds. Striking it though may cause a weapon to be damaged or break.
Andrew Durston of Campaign Nook submitted this:
After that, we received a lava bridge by Jim Magnusson:
Jim’s second entry (a lava crevasse), in color and black & white:
Finally, three entries by Rodger Thorm:
My thanks to those who have already entered. Remember, this contest ends late next Monday night/perhaps Tuesday morning depending on your time zone. Please see the official rules for details.
