Random Dungeon Generators Updated

I’ve updated my reviews of the random dungeon generators available on the internet because two of them were updated since I reviewed them. The full review (including links to the generators) is Random Dungeon Generators Reviewed.

First, “The Demonweb” random dungeon generator addressed my most important critique when it changed its dungeon maps to images for all but one of the dungeon “motifs.” (The HTML motif still outputs a map of characters that look like a map on screen but print as characters.)  Therefore the “Printing” grade went up.

Second, the hack/ random dungeon generator added many new dungeon tiles.  This doesn’t directly affect any of the criticisms in the review so the score isn’t adjusted, but it is worth mentioning.  The designer(s) may simply have goals for it that don’t match the focus of the review.

  1. thanks for the update!

still only a C- for aesthetics, though. hmmm… not sure how i could improve that much more than i have, short of using professionally-illustrated tiles. so desu.

  2. My apologies. I should have revised the Aesthetics score based on your changes. After comparing it to the others, I’d say it is vastly improved (B+), with only one other generator having a nicer looking dungeon. But the generator at the Demonweb scores higher in most other ways.

  3. keen! i just figured you still didn’t like the doors or something.

now i just have to consider variety. round rooms and so forth would indeed be lovely, though largely incompatible with the option for HTML dungeon maps (which i rather like, myself). i suppose i could revisit my code for allowing rooms to collide and be joined into more interesting shapes, although i wasn’t particularly happy with how the first iteration looked.

always good to have something to work on…

    cheers!
