3.5 Fantasy RPG Spells to 5e Conversion Chart

While converting monsters for our own 5e Fiendopedias, we thought it was useful to develop a chart which attempts to name a 5e spell for each 3.5 spell. So if you have a 3.5 monster with spell-like abilities or spellcasting or an NPC spellcaster, you can more easily create its 5e version. Of course if you’re coming from Pathfinder or 3.0, this list will also be very helpful.

A few notes:

  • Some spell names that are not in the OGL have been changed due to an abundance of legal caution. For example we use spare from death for the name of the cleric cantrip with a similar name. We note these with an asterisk and we always start the spell with the same word or at least few letters so they are still easy to look up in other sources.
  • Similarly, spells with a person’s name have had the name changed. The official 3.5 SRD would drop the person’s name or change it to “Mage’s”, but again in order to be able to look it up we felt it was best to create a new name that simply begins with the same first two letters. We note these with an asterisk as well.
  • Because the magic system changed, no spells are exact matches. There is always at least some phrasing difference even when we note “same” in the 5e column.
  • If the 5e column states “see ______” and there are no other notes, then that spell is a close match for the 3.5 spell. If there is a note, it will point out a key difference but there are almost surely other minor changes.
  • If a row has no 5e spell, but it does have a note: an alternate spell that has the core ability but differs in several ways may be noted; or there may be an explanation for why there is no 5e equivalent spell; or there may be a question mark noting that we are looking for suggestions.

This was/is a much bigger effort than it initially seemed, and there are many spells that don’t initially have clear answers. If you’ve got a suggestion, send it to support at inkwellideas dot com. This document is licensed under the OGL, including new spell names and caster names. But we’d like to keep it up to date so please send suggested changes and additions.
