RPG Resources of the Day: Random Generators for Names and More
The RPG Inspiration site has a slew of random generators for names and other things. Names are broken down by race (elf, dwarf, orc, etc.) or by sex and culture for modern names (Chinese male, Spanish female, western male, etc.). In addition there is a tavern name generator, a book generator that lists several books and their descriptions each time the page is reloaded, a generator for the contents of spell books, random incantations, weather, and many more. See them all at rpginspiration.com. I was considering writing a book generator myself, but now that I’ve seen this one I will probably use my time for a different project.
The Red Dragon Inn also has a number of random name generators in its armoury. The armoury also includes tools for tavern names, the population makeup of a fantasy city, gem descriptions among others.
Slack ‘n’ Hash has a very wide variety of name generators including name generators for superheroes and vampires in addition to the usual elf and dwarf name generators. It also provides name generators for the major fantasy game classes.
The Seventh Sanctum has at least 100 different random generators for many varied topics from fanfic plots to anime powers to pirate ship names. Among its random generators is a set of random generators for fantasy chanracters.
Finally, I should mention the random generators I’ve done here at Inkwell Ideas. I’ve put together:
- A Magic Item Shop Random Inventory Generator.
- The Hexographer hex map making program includes a random terrain generator.
If you know of some other useful random generators, post about them in a comment.
