Giving the d12 Some Love: Random Adventure Generator

I stumbled across this PDF a couple weeks ago (through Keith Davies, but it is the work of “Ofthehillpeople” and is hosted by Andrew Shields) and I loved it so much that I didn’t want to lose it. The document is an amazing way to breakdown an adventure into several core components and roll a d12 to determine 1 of 12 possible choices for each component.

So here’s my adventure:

  • Quest Contact: 8. Local Hero: A local hero or legend with too much on his plate already tasks the party with an adventure connected to the local hero’s adventure.
  • The Adventure: 2. Find Someone or Something: Someone or something has gone missing. Whoever did the hiding may have some special “counter-measures” for those on their trail.
  • The Location: 7. An Overgrown Forest: Whether a tropical rain forest or a peaceful woodland, the forests of the land are home to magical beasts, fierce wildlife, and natives who don’t like intruders.
  • The Location #2 (why not have it span multiple?): 9. Mountains/Caves: Towering high above the valleys and forests below, the jagged mountains of the land shoot high into the air. Deadly cliffs, savage cave dwellers, and tumbling rocks make climbing the mountains a difficult task. But the mysteries the caves contain may be worth the risk.
  • The Macguffin: 7. Medicine: Whether you’re treating the common cold or the latest plague, medicine is precious.
  • The Antagonists: 11. Rampaging Monster: It’s big. REALLY big. And it’s wrecking things. Nuff said.
  • The Twists & Complications: 3. Disaster: Something big and bad happens while the adventure is happening. The players did not cause it but they are going to have to deal with the consequences.
  • The Dramatic Conflict: 6. Innocents: Someone who isn’t involved in the adventure is going to be hurt if you succeed. Maybe a secret people weren’t meant to know will be revealed, or after this adventure their lives will be in danger.

  1. Hey there! I’m glad you liked my random adventure generator. I actually ported it from the Interface Zero adventure generator which was more geared toward modern or future games since Interface Zero takes place in the far flung future. Gotta give Gun Metal Games some love for making it but I really wanted something that worked well with Fantasy. But I am continuing work on this and creating another random generator to determine Encounters that would happen in the game, how difficult they should be, and what kind of reward the players should get. So theoretically you could roll 6d12 and 6d10 and know the make of your adventure and the types of challenges your characters would face.

    Look for that soon!
