Moleskin Maps Review

A week or so ago I received a copy of Matt Jackson’s Moleskin Maps volume 3 PDF.  In short it is an excellent collection of hand drawn maps perfect for side treks, mini-quests or hex-crawl stocking.

Each map is shown twice: once in a 1-page-dungeon format and once in a full-page version.  The 1-page -dungeon format gives you a nice way to key the map by listing the background, key locations, wandering monsters and other useful details all on one page with a 1/5 page version of the map.  The large version allows you to better see details and perhaps offer the players a handout when needed.

The PDF  has eight smaller maps with 15 rooms or less and 2 larger maps with 30 or so locations. It is 22 pages: cover, credits page, and as stated above each of the 10 maps has a page for a one-page-dungeon and a full-page map.

The maps themselves show imagination.  For example, one gives parties multiple routes with different challenges to what is an obvious show-down room.  I like the Dyson-esque pattern in the fill areas.  Matt’s prior style confused me because it was similar to eleveation lines, but that is not the case here.

I believe it will be very useful when my hex-crawl campaign picks back up.
