A New Web-Based Village Map Generator

Inkwell Ideas is prototyping a new (to us) technology for making a web-based map that you can then import into our Worldographer for further editing. It uses roughly the same algorithm as Worldographer’s existing city/village map generator, but making this generator web-based makes it more accessible. It does take a minute (depending on your connection) to load all the assets.

See the instructions at the top of the page for some limited editing options (move/rotate/flip buildings & tree clusters) and click elsewhere on the map to access a Settings screen to change the population, river, and coast.

The Settings screen also lets you get the data out of the generator and into Worldographer. Web browsers don’t like to let you directly access the file system from a ‘client app’ so you have to copy the data out of a textfield and paste it into a file. But that’s the only kludgy part of the tool at the moment.  Here’s a sample map it created:
