(We’d love for you to use this version–even better if you can customize it a bit with a point below or how our project can be used with something you’ve done, etc.)

Add points of interest to any fantasy map with Hexploration Decks! And if you want mapmaking help: lay out a campaign area with a set of 3″ hex minimap tiles with art by cartographer Dyson Logos!

Each Hexploration Deck features inspiring artwork on one side and unusual random tables on the other—more than just the basics! What are the strange defense systems of the tower? How did the warren get covered in Fungus? How do people withstand the heat of the Flame Palace? About 10 cards per deck add extra properties, such as whether a location is a Historic Site or Haunted, with unique tables to match. A few additional cards provide guidance on populating and exploring your campaign setting.

The Hex Minimap Tiles let you quickly create a dynamic campaign map. The initial set includes 80+ tiles, each depicting different terrain—mountains, forests, hills, deserts, and more. Print them yourself or get pre-printed, laminated tiles. Add rivers, roads, and settlements with a marker; use a dry-erase marker for reusable maps.

Together, they make the Hexplorer’s Kit!

Stretch goals will add cards to the decks, more minimap tiles, and perhaps even an entire additional deck!

More Details

Decks

Initially, there will be four Hexploration Decks with a possible fifth stretch goal deck.  The deck names/themes are:

  • Settled Lands – Focuses on cities, towns, villages, castles, and other settled locations of a fantasy world.
  • Into the Wilderness – Features strange paths, spooky wilderness, isolated shrines, a hermit’s hut, and so on.
  • The Underrealms – Has ideas for locations in intriguing underground kingdoms.
  • Otherworldly Domains – Spins fantasy locations like a city on the Plane of Fire, magical floating islands, and improbable architecture to list just a few.
  • On the High Seas (Stretch Goal deck) –  Focuses on sea and ocean locations: pirate ports, sea caves, etc.
Each deck has three card types:
  • Location cards provide a picture on one side, and a series of options on the other. Use your own creativity to customize and expand the result to fit your setting. About 40 cards in each deck are Location cards.
  • Trait cards can modify your locations to make them even more distinctive and interesting. You may have a haunted graveyard… but now it also hosts a criminal element–or maybe it is a base for a warrior tradition. Each trait has multiple prompts to ensure more flavor for your sites. 10 cards in each deck have Traits.
  • Reference cards provide distilled guidelines and ideas for how to get the most out of creating and exploring your map. About four cards are Reference cards.

Hex Minimap Tiles

We’ve also created hex minimap tiles that are just plain fun to use!  And we’ve got Dungeons & Dragons cartographer and long-time Inkwell Ideas collaborator Dyson Logos creating them!

  • These will be laminated cardstock, and feel like a driver’s license thickness/durability-wise.  Each will have a sub-hex grid three hexes across (nine total sub-hexes).
  • One side of each will have a minimap with art my Dyson, the other side will be just a grid to make your own design. (Or use them as ocean or open land/prairie.)
  • Initially, we’re planning our sets have 80+ minimaps in each set. Stretch goals have already increased the number!
  • A set of stickers will have icons of towers and towns and other points of interest.  The full set will have 100 stickers, with stretch goals for more.

Hexplorer’s Kit

Get all the decks and the tiles in one box as our Hexplorer’s Kit!  A stretch goal will increase the quality & thickness of the overall box.

Sample Tile Images

These samples have the points of interest (towers, towns, etc.) built into the tile.  But the digital download and the final printed tiles will have those as separate icons/stickers.
