11 Random Dungeon Generators Reviewed

A year and a half ago I reviewed several random dungeon generators.  Several months back, I updated those reviews with one or two new generators which were created/found since my initial reviews, updated at least one review, and unfortunately had to remove the link to one because it was no longer available. (Though I kept the review for posterity.)  Now I’ve reviewed four more.

All of the new additions take a tile-based approach.  (Where a set of images are pre-drawn and simply randomly determined and assembled together.) One of the new generators (“Adventure Generator!”) innovates in a couple of ways over other tile-based generators.  I started seeing it linked a couple of months ago and thought it showed a lot of potential.  Two others reuse the same code and therefore seem to vary only in the style and variety of tiles available.  These two (Risus Monkey’s Random Map and Dyson’s Random Morph Map) seem to be  currently bare-bones; programming-wise.  That’s not meant as a knock on them. They create beautiful maps and are simple to use.  But many of the other generators offer more customization or extra features like room descriptions, monster population, etc. so the reviews of the simpler generators are a bit short.

The fourth generator is by me here at Inkwell Ideas.  Although I write up a sort of review of the generator, I withhold scoring it for obvious reasons.  It also has a tile-based approach but offers more variety and limited customization due to its unique way of joining tiles.

Are there any I should add to the list?  Are there nuances I’m missing?  Please post!

Also at Inkwell Ideas is a random inn/tavern generator that does floorplans, menus, and a list of staff & patrons.

  1. another update, the demonweb random dungeon generator has been moved onto my dedicated gaming tools site, donjon.bin.sh
i’ve made some more upgrades recently, most significantly an option for generating random caverns (under dungeon layout).
