Writober! Luck Token! Shadowdark Post-a-Day In October
This month is Drawtober: 31 drawing prompts related to the Shadowdark RPG, 1 a day, throughout October. But I’m borrowing the prompts for short writing prompts. Today’s prompt is “Luck Token”.
Luck tokens are counters that a character is given for “exceptional roleplaying, heroism,
or just plain coolness.” A player may have at most one of them. And “you can cash in a luck token to re-roll any roll you just made. You must use the new result.” A token may also be given to another companion.
But what are some other ways a GM could let a player use a luck token?
- Make a parry attempt against an opponent’s attack. (Perhaps giving the opponent disadvantage.)
- Move again in combat (but not attack).
- Invent a bit of story that might help the character. For example “those runes look like the same writing as a book I saw in the Library” or “this temple’s god is a rival of mine, I know a lot about this religion” or “I read a recounting of fighting creatures like this, I think I remember their weaknesses.”
- Cause a hit to a foe to have a special effect like taking out an eye or injuring an arm, either one (among others) causing disadvantage on its attacks.
Here are our previous Writober posts so far:
- Torch – Rules for magic torch items (each is a single use magic effect spell like alarm or detect magic).
- Skull – Goblin shaman who can turn victims’ skulls into ways to store spells.
- Fiend – Lists of talents that Devils & Demons typically have for making your own.
- Shadow – Easy ways to make other creatures into shadows.
- Contagion – Discussing the purpose of diseases.
- Valkyrie – A new 3rd party class.
- Toadstool – A new 3rd party ancestry.
- Witchlight – Alternate sources of “witchlight”.
